A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
